Janice's story began as an
only child in the desert of Phoenix, Arizona. She learned what many
south-westerners have learned - to see, hear and feel the beauty of
surroundings in the most austere settings.
Her
spiritual journey began when Mennonite neighbors took her to Vacation
Bible School where, in the lyric of a hymn, she heard God called "Father"
and "Creator."
Piano
and voice lessons led Janice into a college music major, and from there
naturally to the work of performer, performance instructor, songwriter,
music conference coordinator to producer of women's albums and concerts.
Then came a refined focus. At a prestigious Colorado
seminar in the Rocky Mountains, Janice founded and hosted an annual
retreat for music industry women. Success can be worn in many ways and
Janice found successful women wearing it as a cover for pain or fear,
shame or despair, or as a
distraction from committed faith. So she began her
work in earnest. She stood before outwardly put-together women and told
her story. She watched the barriers drop, the tears fall, she watched
Truth conquer Image. The honest sharing that resulted motivated her
to write the highly acclaimed book, Sisters: The Story Goes On.
In all aspects of her life, with quick humor and
personal insights, Janice encourages Christian sisterhood. Age, race,
economics, education, denomination are indicators not barriers; they
are explanations, not conclusions. Along with her partners, Gail Hamilton
and Warner Alliance, this certainty was passionately conveyed in two
albums: Sisters, and the follow-up project, Sisters: The Story
Goes On, which received a Dove Award Nomination for Special Event
Album of the Year.
Janice's next project, One Silent Night, a book-album
duet, features stories and songs of Christmas. The book contains true
stories of well-known and well-known-to-a-few women, a collection to
return to every day of the year, These women, in the midst of
disappointment, celebrated God's greatest gift to humankind: a Savior
born in a stable to give us hope in our silent nights.
If the Prodigal Were a Daughter is
Janice's most recent book release. She retells four of Jesus' parables
in a modern setting with a mostly female cast so the reader might “hear”
the stories as if for the first time. A
non-fiction study of the historical and social context of each parable
enables the reader to understand the irony, subtleties, and meaning of
Jesus’ stories and how the truths and applications remain relevant for
contemporary woman.
Currently, Janice continues to write
and spends much of her day keeping track of a dog, two cats, and her
busy sons, a 21-year-old drummer and a 19-year-old bass player. Her
husband, Jim, is an artist manager and a fabulous cook. He prepares the
meals, she balances the checkbook, the boys practice incessantly, and
they all live quite loudly together in Nashville, Tennessee. |
