Dear
Family and Friends,
I am
thrilled to be home and able to write this short update. Jim will send
out a full report of the last few weeks, but I wanted to tell you the
good news. Last week, I had another bone marrow aspiration and Friday I
was told that hardly any cancer cells were detectable! Praise God!
However, the reality of the situation is that cancer cells are still
present and before they are given a chance to grow and flare, I must
have a donor bone marrow transplant. Tentatively, if I am strong enough
and physically ready, this will take place in November. But first I
need to find a perfect match donor.
Some
of you have expressed interest in being tested as a possible bone marrow
donor. There will be a Bone Marrow Registry drive on October 2 at the
Red Cross Building on Charlotte Avenue. The drive begins at 7:00 a.m.
and ends at 4:00 p.m.
Participants must be in good health, between the ages of 18 and 60.
After signing consent forms, a single vial of blood will be withdrawn.
The
drive is free - up to a point. They ask for a $65 donation to cover the
cost of the testing but do not absolutely require it. A company or
individual can become a sponsor to help cover the costs.
The
drive was originally set up for a young man named Julian (see
attachment), but I have been added to the event. The more who sign up,
the better chances of a match for either one of us. Registered donors
cannot sign up for one specific person, though a note is made of the
request. Perhaps one of "my" people will be a match for Julian - or
someone else in desperate need somewhere in the United States. This is
an opportunity to serve "one of the least of these."
If you
want more specific information, go to the National Marrow Donor Program
(NMDP) web site:
http://www.marrow.org. Or call Linda Hilton at 1-866-680-0137.
Hope to see you on October 2nd. I'll be there for most of the day to
personally thank all who are willing to become donors.
